Beyond Cognitive Coaching: Somatic Energy Awareness with Ram Ramanathan
with Ram Ramanathan, Co-founder, Coacharya (MCC ICF)
Show notes
A coaching podcast with Ram Ramanathan and Tobias Weghorn exploring why “not knowing” can be a stronger coaching stance than problem-solving, especially when clients are stuck in stories and perceptions. In this somatic coaching demo, Ram guides Tobi through a short, practical process that blends a body scan meditation for coaching with the sensory energy awareness model to access what’s actually happening in the body. You’ll hear how simple breathwork, sensing in the trunk (throat to belly), and metaphor work can shift a client’s state without needing the full backstory. The episode also touches on clean language coaching, NLP-style anchoring, and how to bring chakra-based coaching concepts into sessions with very cognitive, science-minded leaders.
Key Learnings:
- Use a short somatic coaching demo flow to move clients from “fixing” into awareness: anchor a resourceful state, then scan for sensations in the trunk before asking any meaning-making questions.
- Apply the sensory energy awareness model by tracking sensation qualities (location, temperature, shape, movement) and letting them shift through attention and breath—before you go back to action steps.
- Borrow from clean language coaching: invite metaphor and imagery (or visual prompts) to help clients describe the felt sense precisely, while keeping you in “not knowing” and the client in self-discovery.

Ram Ramanathan: The moment the coach has an understanding of, this is what is wrong, then you are looking at a solution. You are not looking at awareness. Coaching is principally a journey in not knowing. The moment you have a glimpse of saying, hey, I know what the problem with the client is, you are wrong. You cannot know. That is where the lie is. Because my DNA is not yours, so how would I know what you're facing inside? And that comes from an executive bias, because you are paid to solve problems. So you want to solve a problem first. The coach's job is not to solve a problem. The coach's job is to evoke an awareness, which will solve the problem. Tobi: If you've been coaching the same client for 20 years, that's not a sign of experience or loyalty, but a failure, says today's guest, Ram Ramanathan. Ram is a co-founder of Coacharya, a coach training centre in Bangalore in India, integrating Eastern wisdom with global coaching approaches. And being in his seventies, Ram really projects this wisdom and experience. He's an ICF certified MCC, and these days he also certifies new master coaches for the ICF. And yet he's also very critical of cognitive coaching approaches. So of course what we did in today's session is also not a classic coaching session, but a somatic energy awareness process. Basically a body scan meditation applied to a coaching issue. So if you're in a place where you can close your eyes and focus on your body, I'd invite you to join the exercise Tobi: that Ram takes me through a few minutes into the episode. And of course we also debrief the ins and outs of Ram's approach afterwards, and discuss how you can bring this kind of work into your practice, even with very cognitive and scientifically minded clients. Enjoy, and let's go.
